Clifton Cunningham appointed Managing Editor of Fields Institute Publications
We’re thrilled to announce the appointment of Clifton Cunningham, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Calgary and long-time friend of the Fields Institute, as Managing Editor of the Fields Institute Publication Series.
Our Publications represent a permanent record of activities at the Institute, taking two principal forms: The Communications series consists of conference proceedings that produce high-quality research and survey articles. The Monograph series features a broader scope of research monographs and lecture notes in mathematics and its applications, such as engineering, finance, industry and medicine.
The Managing Editor will be alert to which workshops or programs are presenting material of interest to the wider mathematical community, as well as individuals who are excellent expositors, and encourage them to submit material for publication. Past years have produced anywhere from three to six volumes through our partnership with Springer.
Prof. Cunningham picks up the mantle after several quiet seasons. His personal research experience and broad knowledge of mathematics, combined with his enthusiasm for the job, makes him a natural for infusing new energy into the role, says Fields Institute Deputy Director, Deirdre Haskell. “We are delighted to have him on board,” she adds.
While the role may be new, Prof. Cunningham is no stranger to collaborating with Fields. In his own words, he has been a “visitor and frequent admirer” both in his former position as Site Director for the Pacific Institute for Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), as a Visiting Fellow last summer and as part of our Fields Academy Shared Graduate Courses program, where he taught The Geometry of Local Arthur Packets through the University of Calgary.
The opportunity to join in a more formal capacity came on the heels of this last teaching post. “During my final week of lectures, I wrote [Fields Director] Kumar [Murty] a letter to thank him and said I wanted to get more involved in Fields. He said, ‘I’m free in an hour, want to meet?’” Prof. Cunningham recalls with a laugh. “A few days later I got a communication from Deirdre and suggested this role.”
It didn’t take long to accept the challenge. Prof. Cunningham also saw the role as a chance to grow in a professional capacity. “These are scientifically sophisticated workshops and events and I get to have serious conversations about these things with interesting people. It gives me an opportunity to expand and diversify my thinking about mathematics,” he says.
Early plans include an expansion of our work in Mathematics for Public Health, which recently released a well-received volume; however, the new Managing Editor remains committed to our core program in high-level academic research, which he believes Fields is especially poised to encourage through our community-minded ethos.
“Fields is a distributive network, but it’s also a place and the place is wonderful. It really fosters the kind of collaboration you want to see in mathematics. The quality of the programs is so high. And it gives you access to the whole ecosystem in mathematics.”
