"In 1899, de la
Vallee Poissin found a "standard" zero-free region for
the Riemann zeta function which expresses itself as a lower bound for
$\zeta(1+it)$. Recently, P. Sarnak (at Shalika's 60th Birthday Conference,
2002) discussed some new results coming from generalizations of this region
for automorphic L-functions $L(s,\pi,r)$; our talk will be centered around
these."
