Why Fields
The Fields Institute is a centre for mathematical activity – a hub that provides a supportive and stimulating environment for mathematics innovation and education. Our mission is simple: we seek to bring together mathematicians from across sectors and the globe to develop the mathematics that will shape our future.
How do we enact our mission? Fields was envisioned as a research institute that would draw on the considerable strength of mathematicians across the globe to address challenging issues in mathematics using a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach. As the field of mathematics continues to evolve, our programming at Fields has continued to evolve with it, spanning three central themes that encompass important areas in modern mathematics.
Scientific Programming
The scientific program is the foundation of the Institute. From thematic and focus programs to shorter workshops, seminars, and events, these activities are designed to support and enhance mathematical research and education in the widest sense, whether pure or applied.
Training the Mathematicians of Tomorrow
The students of today are the problem-solvers of tomorrow. At Fields we recognize the value of both inspiring and supporting young students at all levels in order to build a brighter future for our field. As the birthplace of JUMP math, the home of Saturday morning Math Circles and the new host of the Knowledge Network for Applied Education Research (KNAER), Fields focuses on training and supporting future mathematicians in all stages of their development.
Cross-sector Collaboration
At Fields, we recognize the increasing use of applied mathematics outside of traditional fields. Our Centres for Financial Industry and Mathematical Medicine bring the together the very best in industry and mathematics to catalyze scientific activity and increase engagement within their areas of focus.
