MathEd Forum: October 28, 2023
Description
All Canadian jurisdictions include some combination of three main trajectories for secondary school students: (a) workplace / trades / community; (b) applied / college, and (c) academic / university. Until recently, Ontario was the only Canadian jurisdiction that started differentiating/streaming from Grade 9, others started to differentiate learning trajectories in Grade 10. In September 2021, Ontario introduced a new de-streamed mathematics course, which replaced the Grade 9 academic and applied courses. According to our Ministry website, this course “is designed to provide a learning experience for all students to engage in rich complex mathematics, including new areas like coding, data literacy, and financial literacy. This course also emphasizes connections among mathematical concepts, real-life applications and students’ lived experiences.” After two years of implementation, we invited our speakers to tell us about their research and teaching experiences with the de-streamed mathematics curriculum in the publicly funded Ontario education system.
