The FUSRP accepts applications from undergraduate students from anywhere in the world studying at any university. To apply in 2018 you must:

• Be at least 18 years of age
• Be enrolled in full-time undergraduate or combined undergraduate/Master’s programs in a mathematics-related discipline
• Have a minimum of one semester remaining in your program as of September 2017
• Be available to complete a nine-week placement, arriving in Canada between July 3 and August 31, 2018
• Possess a valid passport from your home country that is valid until at least January 2019

FUSRP students are required to:

• Make all necessary preparations for travel to Toronto (international and non-GTA students only).
• Obtain appropriate work permit for Canada. Fields will work with students to ensure you have the necessary documentation to apply for a work permit (international students only).
• Attend and participate in the Program’s Orientation and Welcome and Mini-Conference on July 3 and August 29, 2018, respectively.
• Work full-time on the research project. Submit a final report and exit survey to Fields at the end of the project.
• Agree to a Code of Conduct and liability waiver before you are admitted into the program. Failure to abide by the Code of Conduct and liability waiver could result in a denial of your certificate of completion and/or expulsion from the program, depending on the severity and nature of the misconduct.
• Represent your country of origin, Fields, and the FUSRP program. Students will be held to a high standard of conduct in relations with your supervisor, your peers, Fields staff, and members of the public.

Students who are accepted into the Program will receive a daily meal allowance and, depending on where you are travelling from, the following additional support:  

• Students from within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) will be reimbursed for the cost of a monthly public transit pass (TTC Metropass).
• Students from outside the GTA will receive financial support for travel to and residence in Toronto (student residence housing at the University of Toronto Downtown (St. George) Campus) for the duration of the Program, and
• Students from outside of Canada will be provided the same support as students from outside the GTA, as well as medical coverage during their stay. 

Students may also have the opportunity to visit their supervisors' home institution.

During the application process, you will be prompted to upload your Curriculum Vitae (CV) together with a letter outlining your relevant background and experience. Your letter must:

• not exceed two letter-sized pages,
• be in 12-point Times New Roman font, with single line spacing,
• have top, bottom, and side margins that are no less than one inch.

Your letter and CV must be submitted in a single, combined PDF document.

For your application to be considered, you must also arrange to have the following documents provided directly to the Fields Institute, on or before the application deadline:

A. Transcripts

To submit your transcript(s), follow these steps:

1. Upload a scanned copy of your unofficial transcript(s) into the online application form. As part of the online application, unofficial transcripts may be submitted for initial review (formatted as PDF document). This step is not mandatory, but it is recommended. 

2. Arrange for your official transcript(s)* to be sent directly from your degree-granting institution to the Fields Institute. This step is mandatory.

*An official transcript must be an original document bearing the institutional seal and official signature of the Registrar or copies verified by a school administrative officer and is one that is sent to Fields in one of two ways:

1) Postal Service

If you are sending your transcript by postal service, it must be received by Fields from the issuing academic institution in its original, sealed envelope.

Use of secure electronically-delivered transcripts that are password protected. The document's certified digital signature embedded in the document PDF assures us that it has been prepared by the college/university and that the document is original and unaltered. Please check with the registrar's office of your college/university to see if they provide secure electronic certified transcript service.

If we do not receive your official transcripts before the application deadline, we would still consider your application for review with the caveat that unofficial transcripts submitted will be matched against official transcripts once received.

B. Letters of reference

Letters of reference from someone who can provide a candid evaluation of your qualifications or skills. You must provide a minimum of two and a maximum of three references. The referees will be contacted using the details you provide on the online application form. Please be sure to enter their information correctly. Your referees will be asked to submit their letters confidentially online as text or as a PDF file. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that reference letters have been submitted by the application deadline.

To be considered for the Program, all of your materials must be received by the Fields Institute by the stated deadline.

It may be necessary for accepted students who are foreign nationals to make arrangements for your visit and, if required, obtain the necessary travel documents to be permitted entry to Canada. If you are a foreign national, we urge you to start the required process as early as possible after submitting your confirmation of acceptance.

The University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) is a mandatory health insurance plan for all international and exchange students enrolled at Ontario universities. UHIP helps to cover the cost of hospital and medical services students may need to maintain their health while in Canada. Everything you need to know about UHIP is available online at www.uhip.ca.

Accepted students who require UHIP should read the following instructions to complete the UHIP Application Form.

• Only fill out section 1 and then sign and date section 4 on the second page
• The “Member’s effective date of coverage” is the date you arrived in Toronto

You are expected to stay in Canada for the full nine-week duration of the program.

Students are required to work 35 hours a week, five days a week for nine consecutive weeks. Most students work during regular business hours (for example, 9 am-5 pm), but this depends on your specific arrangement with your supervisor.

You are expected to let your supervisor know if you are missing time from your research for any reason, such as due to illness or to attend a Fields event.

Fields invites students to attend FUSRP-tailored events and professional development workshops during their stay at Fields. Attendance is not mandatory, but we highly recommend that students take part to fully experience the benefits of the FUSRP.

Students are also welcome to attend all Fields Institute-hosted public lectures and to register for on-site courses and events, attend seminars, and meet/collaborate with other visitors. No, however, students with higher GPA rank higher during the selection process.

The Fields Institute welcomes students with experience in any area of mathematical sciences.

Letters should address the academic and research backgrounds of the applicant as much as possible, in addition to character references if deemed relevant for the program.

The FUSRP is intended for undergraduate-level students; if you have already completed an undergraduate degree in mathematics, you are not eligible for the program.
