TORONTO, ON – June 23, 2022: Created in 2002 to mark the Institute's 10th Anniversary, the designation of Fields Institute Fellow is awarded annually to a select group of people in recognition of their outstanding contributions.
A brief history of John Charles Fields (1863 - 1932) and his influence on the world of mathematics; including bringing together mathematicians from around the world, establishing a mathematical medal, and being the namesake of a Mathematics Research Institute.
Collaboration is the backbone of mathematical progress. It’s also really hard. Put a group of mathematicians together and see what happens when they get near a chalkboard. Let’s just say there’s a reason coffee is a line item in most department budgets. But once the chalk dust settles, something beautiful and new can emerge.
