Being in Relation: What roles can mathematics play for community resilience, innovation and human-ecological justice?
In this presentation I offer ideas for critical dialogue on strategies for reconciliation through place/land for teaching and learning mathematics. What do communities say they want and need to support improved educational experiences for their learners? This presentation will explore this question and teaching approaches that support and build upon community strengths for mathematics education.
Bio: Cynthia Nicol is Associate Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy in the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Education and is presently the David F. Robitaille Professor in Mathematics and Science Education . With teachers and communities, she is exploring new ways of making mathematics responsive to all learners by connecting math, community and culture, emphasizing place and community-based education, and exploring social justice issues through mathematics.
