Abstract:
We present a new class of transformations and establish a theoretical framework to compress and characterize large volumes of highly volatile time series data. Our proposed Lehmer transform can be seen as a domain representation on a space of the so-called suddency moments, sharing several similarities with the widely used frequency domain. Nevertheless, we demonstrate that the methodologies based on the time-suddency decomposition have advantages over the classical time-frequency methods such as Fourier and Wavelet transforms for analyzing the extreme events in nonstationary and highly oscillatory stochastic processes like biological signals.
