Calibrated submanifolds are volume minimising submanifolds that occur naturally inmanifolds with special holonomy. This talk will focus on the deformation theory of Cayley submanifolds, which live inside Spin(7)-manifolds, with an emphasis on the relationship between Cayley submanifolds and complex surfaces inside four-dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds.
