We reconsider the favourite distance problem introduced by Avis, Erdös and Pach some 20 years ago. In particular we give stability results and characterise the extremal situations in Euclidean spaces of dimensions 4 and higher. We also consider some other metric spaces where dense favourite distance digraphs occur.
