Abstract:
In her thesis Mirzakhani established an asymptotic for the number of simple closed geodesics of length at most L on a hyperbolic surface,as L goes to infinity. She returned to variants of this problem where one counts orbits of the mapping class group in certain actions . We review these results and show how they serve as a tool in diophantine analysis on certain character varieties.
