In this talk, I will explain how recent advances in $p$-adic Hodge theory can be used to construct $E_\infty$-ring structures on Johnson--Wilson spectra at all heights and primes. This is in contrast to the situation for truncated Brown--Peterson spectra, which do not admit the structure of $E_\infty$-ring spectra at heights four and above. Our approach is inspired by earlier partial results of Lawson and makes crucial use of Zink's theory of displays.
