Abstract:
The Faculty of Education at UOIT offers mandatory educational coding courses for all of its preservice teachers (P/J/I/S). The courses were introduced with the new 2-year B.Ed. program two years ago and offer unique experiences for Ontario preservice teachers. The courses are 36-hours long and take an interdisciplinary approach connecting computer coding and STEAM learning. In this talk, we reflect on the courses’ intentions and implementations so far. In particular, we discuss different priorities for teacher education that have influenced the structure and scope of the courses, highlighting both possibilities and predicaments for professional development.
