Abstract:
The essential dimension of an algebraic object is an integer that measures the complexity of the object. Essential dimension, which is defined in elementary terms, has connections with many areas of algebra such as algebraic geometry, algebraic K-theory, Galois cohomology, representation theory of algebraic groups, theory of fibered categories and valuation theory. I will overview the main ideas, results and applications.
