Abstract:
Since the late 1970's Geometric Analysis has been one of the most active and multidisciplinary areas of pure mathematics, involving a beautiful mixture of algebra, analysis, topology, and geometry. Moreover, significant interaction between geometric analysis and theoretical physics, going in both directions, has resulted in many spectacular successes on both sides. I will give a brief overview of geometric analysis as a discipline, and highlight some of its most notable achievements. Then I will describe some of the major events and high profile participants that will be involved in the Thematic Program on Geometric Analysis that will be held at the Fields Institute on July-December 2017.
