How do we ensure that Canada has an emergency-ready health research system?
Dr. Marisa Creatore (Executive Director of the CRPPHE) will present on the new CIHR Centre for Research on Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies (CRPPHE). Launched in January 2022, the CRPPHE focuses on growing Canada’s capacity to generate and mobilize knowledge related to preventing, preparing for, responding to, and recovering from pandemics and other health emergencies. By the end of 2022, the CRPPHE had invested over $26M in funding for research on pandemics and health emergencies. This includes rapid funding to respond to public health emergencies such as ongoing evidence gaps related to COVID-19 and post COVID-19 Condition and Mpox. CRPPHE also has a mandate to coordinate health research in Canada and internationally related to health emergencies. As we begin to shift our focus away from the acute, response phase of the pandemic, the CRPPHE is focusing on how to ensure an emergency-ready research system in advance of the next crisis. This includes planning investments in research networks, capacity building and training, and building mechanisms for rapid prioritization, coordination, knowledge translation and mobilization of research evidence. What are the best mechanisms to ensure preparedness in the health research ecosystem? Where do we need to build capacity? How can we support important research response mechanisms between emergencies in a way that is sustainable and equitable? How do we ensure cohesion in research across the country and internationally? We look forward to having a dynamic discussion in this session about how research funders and the Federal government can ensure that Canada has an emergency-ready health research system.
