Abstract:
One can choose a "best" train track for almost any quadratic differential. This choice evolves naturally via splitting sequences along Teichmüller geodesics. The combinatorics of these splitting sequences can be used to explain why pairs of geodesics whose initial quadratic differentials have the same vertical foliation become exponentially close (as a function of time) provided they don't spend most of their time in the cusp of moduli space.
