Abstract:
My talk will list a number of ``innocent looking'' problems of general topology that, in the spirit of Erd\H{o}s' above bon mot, quite unexpectedly lead to, or boil down to independent statements of set theory. These may involve large cardinals, or forcing arguments, or just statements of cardinal arithmetic or combinatorial principles that are known to be independent of the usual axioms of set theory.
