A Lax pair for the half-wave maps equation

Abstract:
We consider the half-wave maps equation in one space dimension, with values into the two-dimensional sphere. This is an energy critical quasi-linear Hamiltonian evolution system, arising as an effective equation for classical and continuum limit of quantum spin chains. We prove that the half-wave maps equation admits a Lax pair, and we discuss some consequences of this result on the dynamics. This is a joint work with Enno Lenzmann.
