In the past 5 years a number of results related to (non-)definability of maximal almost disjoint families, and variants of these, such as ``med'' families and maximal cofinitary groups, have emerged. Today we have a far more complete picture of this area of study, which often beautifully combines descriptive set theory with combinatorial set theory.

I will give an overview of these developments, and also discuss some open problems.
