Abstract:
This lecture will be about the ways in which operators in an self-adjoint operator algebra can be decomposed as convex combinations of unitary operators. The main result is a proof of a sharp inequality for the minimum number of unitary operators needed. (joint work with Uffe Haagerup and Gert Kjærgaard Pedersen - to appear in the volumes of Math.
