The famous theorems of Ratner and Margulis on the classification of invariant measures and orbit closures for unipotent flows are a cornerstone of homogeneous dynamics. It became clear in recent years that at least some of the results persist in the much more general setting of smooth dynamics (even though the proofs are substantially different). I will survey some of the recent developments.
