We give an introduction to mathematical diffraction theory. Our main focus is the phenomenon of pure point diffraction. Pure point diffraction is fundamental in the treatment of quasicrystals. There, we discuss recent results obtained in joint work with Timo Spindeler and Nicolae Strungaru. These results characterize pure point diffraction in terms of certain averaged almost periodicity properties.
