Wave operators appeared first in the quantum scattering theory. From the mathematical point of view they belong to the perturbation theory of self-adjoint operators. We shall show, that after a suitable modification they are useful when we construct examples of locally compact quantum groups. The set of presented examples will include the (unpublished as of yet) quantum ‘ax + b’-group with Schmudgen commutation relations.
