What Do We Mean By “Mathematics”?
What do we communicate when we use the word “mathematics”? This session will explore three interpretations to show how differently that word can be used in educational settings. I will share examples to illustrate each interpretation.
Bio
Dr. Eva Thanheiser, Professor of Mathematics Education, is an award-winning mathematics educator who is currently working on three NSF-funded grants. Her expertise focuses on anti-bias mathematics education at the K-12 and postsecondary levels. She examines what mathematics instruction could look like when it is designed to allow all learners to engage. She also examines how a focus on community and belonging can change participation structures and engagement in the mathematics classroom. Thanheiser is a co-author of two book series, one focused on Teaching Math for Social Justice at the Middle School level and the other focused on Powerful Mathematicians at the K-5 level, as well as co-editor for the Journal of Mathematical Behavior Special Issue Mathematics in Society: Exploring the mathematics that underpins social issues.
