An analytical approach to surface plasmon polaritons: Dispersion and scattering

Abstract:
Recently, the fabrication of atomically thick materials with tunable electronic structure and macroscopic conductivity has led to notable advances in nano-photonics. This talk focuses on recent progress in analyzing the emergent properties of evanescent electromagnetic waves, called surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), that may propagate on conducting 2D materials. First, I will discuss the generation and dispersion of SPPs via scattering of waves from anisotropic conducting sheets with edges via the theory of the matrix Wiener-Hopf integral equation. Second, I will describe how the curvature of the 2D material can influence dispersion of SPPs. Part of this work is joint with M. Luskin, M. Maier and T. Low.
