Abstract:
We survey the present status of the Gromov-Lawson-Rosenberg conjecture concerning the existence of positive scalar curvature Riemannian metrics on closed oriented, non-simply connected smooth manifolds. Equivariant bordism theory plays a special role in this study. In the sequel we sketch a recent proof of this conjecture for atoral manifolds of dimension at least five and with abelian fundamental groups of odd order.
