Abstract:
Recent work in computational biology has led to the development of a universal mathematical model of tumor growth based on metabolism. We study tumor growth with and intervention term c in order to analyze tumor growth in adverse cellular conditions. We assess the intervention term, c, as a constant and as a function of time. These simulations suggest that tumor treatment does not, in general, cause a monotonic decrease in mass and this finding is reflected in experimental data from the cancer literature. Our findings have potential applications for the development of cancer treatment by demonstrating that the duration and quantity of treatment can be optimized to suppress tumor growth, prevent metastasis, and prepare for tumor excision.
