In the talk I will report on the ongoing hunt on rank 4 local systems underlying VHS of weight 3 with all Hodge numbers equal to 1, and which motivic, that is, of geometric origin. We will describe several examples with unusual geometric or arithmetic properties and discuss there relevance for mirror symmetry of Calabi--Yau three-folds. (joint work in preparation with S. Cynk)
