Abstract:
The one-dimensional wave equation serves as a basic model for the propagation of acoustic or electromagnetic energy in layered media, and thus arises in the context of various imaging modalities, such as seismic or ultrasound. Although it has been studied extensively, recent results have revealed some unexpected mathematical connections and new features. This talk will discuss ongoing work concerning both numerical and analytic aspects of the wave equation in one spatial dimension.
