Abstract:
Advances in tracking technology have led to huge volumes of data on animal movement, opening a variety of modeling and statistical challenges. I will demonstrate some of these challenges with data on Florida panther movement, showing how to incorporate diurnal variation in behaviour into a hidden Markov model. This relatively focused question leads to more general, open questions of how to construct and choose models of appropriate complexity when large quantities of data are available.
