Given a function or family of functions on a domain, can we extend it or all of them to a larger domain preserving certain properties? This general kind of problem seems to cut across a wide variety of subjects including model theory, algebra/geometry, analysis, and set theory, We discuss some contexts, including the extension of families of real functions to Conway's surreal number system.
