Abstract:
The discovery of quasicrystals precipitated a re-examination of the mathematics of diffraction. Here we discuss some of the history of diffraction and its famous inverse problem, and survey some of the mathematics that has been evolving around its relations to symmetry, long-range aperiodic order, almost periodic measures, and stochastic point processes.
