We discuss efforts towards completing the classification of Hodge structures arising from abelian varieties. In particular, we discuss the completion of Satake's classification of Kuga fiber varieties. We apply this to the following question: To what extent is the category of Hodge structures arising from abelian varieties closed under Tate twists?
