I'll explain recent developments on some remarkable conjectures of Hausel, Letellier, and Villegas, relating the Betti numbers (and more general mixed Hodge polynomials) of the character variety with combinatorial formulas that appear in studying sheaves on the Hilbert scheme of points in the plane.
