Workshop on Large Scale Geometry and Applications
Description
Large scale geometry, also known as coarse geometry, plays an important role in geometric group theory, algebraic K-theory, non-commutative geometry, and related areas of analysis. In recent years, large scale geometry has grown into a subject in its own right, largely due to its interactions with these other vibrant subjects. Large scale decompositions of metric spaces, and embeddings of metric spaces into Banach or Hilbert spaces, have played key roles in the study of assembly maps, leading to breakthrough results on the Novikov Conjecture in geometric topology, the Farrell-Jones Conjecture in algebraic K-theory, and the Baum-Connes Conjecture in non-commutative geometry. In geometric group theory, large scale geometry has been hugely influential, especially in situations where some notion of nonpositive curvature is present (hyperbolic groups, mapping class groups, and CAT(0) groups, for instance). This workshop will bring together researchers from the various areas impacted by large-scale geometry.
